When introducing the concept of triple meter and the waltz movement, offering a variety of ways for the children to practice and explore this concept will strengthen their understanding. By counting 1-2-3 and emphasizing the first beat with your voice as well as adding a large motion to the first beat of the clapping pattern, the children are able to feel and experience this rhythm. Moving a prop, such as a scarf, in a three beat pattern to the music reinforces the experience of the triple meter. Each layer of experience in this activity supports learning and understanding. This skill building activity will continue to aid the children in other activities that require complex coordination.
