When children experience a wide variety of musical genres they develop a greater understanding for what is possible through music. Jazz invites musicians to create something new each time they play. Improvisation, which is the process of spontaneously creating music that arises out of the present moment, is the key to playing jazz. Jazz opens up listening to a new frontier, a place where a piece of music is created anew each time it is played. When we give children the opportunity to listen, play, and move to many different music genres, they can bring these elements together to create their own musical style and expression.
