Gross motor movement involves large muscle groups such as legs or arms or the whole body. Locomotor movement means using large muscle groups to move from one place to another. When children walk, march, tiptoe, or run, they are engaging in both gross motor and locomotor movement. Movement of all kinds strengthens muscles and keeps the cardiovascular system healthy, as well as fosters balance, coordination, rhythm, and improved cognitive development. Children have an inherent need to move and express themselves through movement. In the Kindermusik classroom, children are given abundant opportunities to move and dance in new and familiar ways which creates an environment where all these skills can flourish and develop.
